Battle Royale: too much or not enough?

5 min read

Welcome fellow controller weilding Warriors! Doogle here straight from Team Hamster HQ.

So in this weeks blog I am going to be looking at Battle Royales. I’m going to address the overwhelming success of this mode and also ask the question “has this become a flooded market of games trying to replicate other developers success?” But lets not get ahead of ourselves, firstly lets get to know this game mode first.

What is as a Battle Royale?

A battle royal game (or mode) is essentially every player for themselves whether you’re going it alone or in teams, the aim is to out last every other player (or team) at all costs. It is an exhilarating mode that leaves no area undiscovered and is very much no retreat no surrender.

Why is it so popular?

That’s a damn good question so lets look at this in more detail shall we:

GAME PLAY: A common theme that runs throughout a Battle Royale is the adrenaline rush you get knowing that at any minute it could all be over for you (and your team). The suspense alone is enough to put you on the edge of your seat!

THE LONG AND THE SHORT: Battle Royale tends not to last too long but are just long enough to keep you interested, you know that at a set interval the map is going to get smaller and you best hope your inside the area as it shrinks otherwise you are going to be in a whole lot of pain.

NO SACRIFICE NO DAMN VICTORY: Believe me nothing feels better than kicking ass and taking names, especially when you get your first ever victory nothing feels better whether your on your own or with a team coming out on top never feels any better and the loot from victory always sweetens the deal.

Your squad is like your family, don’t leave anyone behind!

Well that sounds bloody great hand me my controller I’m in!

Hold your horses there slick don’t go diving in there just yet. For sure this game mode is a whole lot of fun but believe me there are so many games out there these days that are a fully dedicated Battle Royale game (Fortnite, H1Z1 and PUBG to name a few), there are also games that have “bolted” on the mode to their releases like Frankenstein’s monster, it is here that we fall into a rut.

You see the issue is due to the MASSIVE popularity of this game mode. Publisher/Developers have found ways or reasons to add a “Battle Royale” mode to their games when its really not bloody necessary. Take Call of Duty Black ops 4, I’m going to be unpopular about this but there was absolutely no need to add it to Black Ops 4, I can’t help but feel that they have tried too hard to match the amazing success of PUBG. It’s a shame but this is the thing with Battle Royale game modes, you’re not always going to be able to go toe to toe with the big dogs.

Not to mention that in a (not so surprising move) EA blamed single payer modes for the failure of their attempt, mind you that doesn’t surprise me coming from a company who believes loot boxes are a surprise mechanic and not in anyway linked to gambling (but that’s another story, which conveniently you can read here)

Another game that tried to add this game mode and failed is Battlefield V, again WHY? there wasn’t any need for this to be added and sadly it shows. You can see that it struggles to compete with those such as Fortnite and PUBG.

Firestorm (Battlefield’s name for their Battle Royale mode) feels slow and at best a lame version of an otherwise great concept, the game play feels clunky and the UI could do with an overhaul.

When it comes to Battle Royale it really is a game of life and death and nothing is more intense!

So now you’re saying avoid these?

Nope, not at all, I simply feel that in this current genre there are the “Players and the Pretenders”. It’s clear that some are in this for a quick money making experience, but there are also gaming developers / Publishers who take this genre seriously, focus all they can on this mode and are always looking to improve and update the experiences for those who play.

Do I personally believe there are too many versions of this mode? Absolutely but then again you could say that about any form of game currently out there. The only difference is that these games don’t try to pretend (or at least try not to so obviously) to be something they are not.

I have played my share of Battle Royale games but each time for me its the dedicated Battle Royale game that has come out on top. Its simply down to the fact that the developers are all fully focused on their game, whereas if its is a mode in an already present game, the level of dedication has to be divided and this is where the cracks begin to show.

If developers (that added this to their already created game) had decided to separate their teams, to create a standalone Battle Royale then I have no doubt they would be able to contend with other dedicated games like Fortnite, PUBG, H1Z1.

If you want an example of what I mean take a look at Apex Legends. This game was released by Respawn Entertainment and is based in their Titanfall universe.

Rather than add this onto one of their games they released this separately and has its own dedicated team. Not only this but it has flourished and has become hugely popular and has been able to walk with the big dogs of the genre.

Wrapping this up I firmly believe that we have a flooded genre of Battle Royale games or modes. We are seeing more and more attempts and it is now at a point where gamer’s are potentially getting bored of seeing another poor attempt.

Developers need to take a step back and stop trying to copy the Originals of this genre (think TNA Wrestling trying to out do WWE) and falling massively short and not being able to understand why.

Either way Battle Royale is here to stay and no doubt we will see more carbon copies in the future, the question is will they be able to compete?

Nothing beats the feeling of a Battle Royal Victory whether its your first of 101st it never gets old!

I hope you have enjoyed this read, what are your thoughts? Do you have a favourite? Have you even played one?

Why not leave a comment on here and share your thoughts too. Until next week peeps! – Doogle

  1. Battle royale is a boring game mode that only gets exciting 0.1% of the time.

Most of the time it’s running in a straight line and either dying cos someone a million miles away shot you or every now and then catching another player by surprise.

    1. A fair point of view, I have to admit the initial adrenaline rush soon wears off for me. Yet here we are with this genre booming and its raking in the £’s!

Thanks for commenting though glad to see people are interested!
